Sad Ending of a Young Life
Thursday afternoon a son of J. Miller was in the Des Moines River near Swan, fishing with four other men. Just as the men were busy with the seine, Miller stepped into the water, which was thought to be shallow, but he stepped into a hole and did not rise. Two of the men plunged in after him and dragged him toward the shore but the sand was so deep they could scarcely get along and called to the others to help them. One man got there but sank into a hole in trying to save both. The boy being lifeless sank again and despite the efforts of the men he never rose again. The body was not found until Friday noon although search was made all the time. Sad indeed to the sorrowing mother whose life has been clouded with sorrow many years. The young man was about 17 years old. The interment was Saturday in the Vandalia Cemetery, where a large concourse of neighbors and friends gathered to comfort the sorrowing parents. ~ The Newton Record Thursday, July 20, 1899
