Arthur A. Southern, 77, a life-long resident of Jasper county, passed away Monday, July 29, of a heart attack at the home of his son, Howard Southern, in Mingo.
The son of William J. and Mary Southern, he was born October 17, 1879, on a farm south of Mingo. He was educated in rural schools. On December 16, 1904, he was married to Lucinda Jones. They continued farming on a farm south of Mingo until 1944 at which time Mr. Southern retired and moved to Newton. He had served on the Mingo school board for several years. After moving to Newton, he served as court bailiff until 1952 when he suffered a mild heart attack. Mr. and Mrs. Southern celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1954. He was a member of the First Methodist church at Newton, Iowa.
Mr. Southern is survived by his wife; three sons, Howard of Mingo, Lynn of Clinton and Francis of Mingo; a daughter, Mrs. Ivan (Colene) Hinshaw of Newton; 7 grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Turner of Mingo and Mrs. Edna Barclay who lives in Pennsylvania.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 1, at 2 p.m. at the Mingo Methodist church with Rev. Kenneth E. Nesbitt and Dr. Allan K. Williams officiating. Burial will be in Union Chapel cemetery. The body will be taken to the Howard Southern home at Mingo Wednesday at 5 p.m. and remain there until the time of the church service.
The Boyd-Nickell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
