Death of Mr. D. W. Main

His labors are ended; a noble life has gone out, were words that greeted our ears Friday afternoon, as the lowering clouds and the fast falling snow rendered the day somewhat drear and gloomy. Upon inquiry we were informed the Mr. D. W. Main, while chopping wood in his own yard had dropped dead. His wife saw him fall and ran to him, but before help could be obtained, he had ceased to breathe.

Mr. Main was born in Pennsylvania, April 21, 1821, and died suddenly at his home in Prairie City December 3, 1897. At the age of seven years moved with his parents to Ohio, where he grew to manhood estate, when he was married to Miss Anor Kelso June 10, 1856. Mr. and Mrs. Main moved to Iowa and purchased a farm close to the northwest corner of what is now Prairie City, which is now owned by Alfred Potter. Their dwelling stood where W. H. Bryan’s store now stands.

In 1861 they built and moved on their newly purchased farm east of Prairie City, where the lived until September of this year, when they moved into the beautiful new home he had built during the early part of the year, southeast of square. This worthy couple had traveled life’s journey together 55 years. Their home had been blessed with twelve children eight of whom, with the aged widow, mourn the loss of a tender father and husband. Mr. Main converted and joined the M. E. Church in his early married life. Those who have known him the greater part of his life have said that in business affairs his word was as good as his bond.

The funeral obsequies were held at the M. E. Church Sunday at 11 a. m. Rev. J. C. Hall officiating, assisted by Rev. J. J. Mitchell. The children of deceased, who were in attendance were R. L. Main and wife of Colfax, Mrs. M. H. Russell and Mrs. R. B. Smith and husband of Bagley, Harlan Main and wife, living on the home farm east of town, Berg Main and wife of this place, and Mrs. W. E. Roberts and husband near Metz. C. A. Main, brother of the deceased, of Yale, Ia., grandchildren from other places, John Main, Jr. and wife, John Keippe and wife of Colfax, John Secrist of Des Moines, also a number of friends from other places were present. One daughter, Mrs. Bussing, could not be present, who lives in California, and Mrs. Anna Main, who lives with the aged mother. Thus another good man has been removed from our midst whose life will not soon be forgotten in the community where he has lived so long. ~ The Newton (IA) Record Friday, December 10, 1897
