NEWBURG -- John Newcomer, 65, of Newburg died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

A funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Newburg-Chester Congregational Church in Newburg with the Rev. Jeff Maskevich officiating. Burial will be held at Chester Cemetery near Newburg.

Friends may call after noon Friday at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the Newburg-Chester Congregational Church.

The son of Frank and Lucille (Thompson) Newcomer, he was born Aug. 13, 1939, in Grinnell. He was raised in the Newburg area and graduated from Newburg High School in 1957. He was a lifelong resident of the Newburg community, where he operated a grain and livestock farm. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, Newburg Farmer's Co-op and the Newburg-Chester Congregational Church.

Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Charles and Patricia Newcomer of Des Moines and one niece, one nephew and several cousins.
