BAXTER -- Madeline McKenzie, 86, formerly of Baxter, died Wednesday, Sept. 15.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Baxter Congregational United Church of Christ. Hamilton's Funeral Home in Des Moines is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Baxter Community School.

She was born Jan. 23, 1918, in Lancaster, Mo., to Ruth (Powell) and Thomas Couch. Following graduation from Indianola High School and Simpson College, she taught in the Maxwell and Baxter school systems. In Baxter, she served on the school board and city council and was a member of Eastern Star.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Kent Colberg; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Tom McKenzie and Jim and Chris McKenzie; a sister, Norma Lee Plude; and brother-in-law Earl J. Fries and his wife LaVena; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Kenneth J. McKenzie; her parents; a sister, Maurine Fries; a brother William Couch; and brother-in-law Tom Plude.
