Melba R. Ely, 78, of Newton died Tuesday, Sept. 14, at Park Center in Newton.

Services will be held at a later date. Her body has been cremated. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

The daughter of Carlton H. "Tane" and Mary M. (McNew) Weimer, she was born Sept. 28, 1925, in Newton. She graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1943. In February of 1944, she married H. Dean Ely in California. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and enjoyed reading. She worked as a secretary for the Maytag Company for 37 years.

Survivors include her husband; a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Karen Ely of West Des Moines; one granddaughter; and a brother, Donald J. Weimer of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter in infancy.
