GRINNELL -- Roger Bailey, 71, of Grinnell, former Maytag employee, died of cancer Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

A public visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.

A private family burial will be held at a later date in Hazelwood Cemetery.

The son of Warren and Stella (Hansen) Bailey, he was born July 24, 1933, in Grinnell. He was raised in the Grinnell area and attended rural schools and Grinnell High School. During the time of the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Army in Germany. On March 7, 1953, he married Bessie Schmidt in Grinnell. The couple lived in Grinnell and he worked for various construction companies, Ahrens Manufacturing Company and for Eddie Anderson. He also was employed at Plant 2 of the Maytag Company for 31 years. He was a member of the Grinnell American Legion and the VFW.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Cindy Asay of Eugene, Ore.; three sons, Wayne, Loren and Eric Bailey, all of Grinnell; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one sister, Donna Yancy of Mesa, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Warren "Bud" Bailey.
