Catherine "Kitty" Vollers, 96, of Newton died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at Careage of Newton.

Funeral services were held Saturday at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.

Memorials will be accepted to the First Presbyterian Church in Newton and may be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of E. Nicholas and Gertrude (Whitney) Meyers, she was born June 12, 1908, in Wolsey, S.D. She graduated from Sioux City Central High School, Mankato State Teachers College in Mankato, Minn., and Drake University. She also studied drama at the University of Minnesota and at Morningside College.

She married Frederick O. Vollers in Papillion, Neb. in 1938. She taught for 25 years in the Newton school district at Emerson Hough and Lincoln elementaries, Central Junior High School and Berg Junior High School. She also spent 10 years in teaching homebound children in the Newton school district.

Survivors include a son, Nicolas F. Vollers; a daughter, Margie B. Papenhausen; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
