GRINNELL -- Frances Pauline Watkins-Smith, 86, of Grinnell, formerly of Newton, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at Friendship Manor Care Center in Grinnell.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Kenneth Van Loon, pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church in Newton, officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call after 11 a.m. Monday until the time of the service at the funeral home. Memorials will be accepted in her name or to the Immanuel Baptist Church in Newton.

The daughter of Roy and Margie Strain-Young, she was born Nov. 17, 1918, in Clive. She attended Hanover country schools. In 1945, she married William Henry Watkins in Des Moines. She later married Francis Clyde Smith on April 14, 1979, in Newton. She was a homemaker and cleaned the homes of area Newton residents for many years. She enjoyed crafts and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Newton.

Survivors include nephews, Robert, James and Charles White; several grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and special friends, Lonnie and Julie Walker and their family of Sully.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands; and an infant daughter. ~ Newton Daily News, Friday, November 26, 2004
