Morris K. "Sig" Sigurdson, 80, of Newton died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at his home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Newton with the Rev. Tiare and the Rev. Stephen Mathison-Bowie officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Hospice of Jasper County or the First Presbyterian Church and may be left at the funeral home or at the church the day of the service.

The son of Gunner and Sarah Sigurdson, he was born Nov. 6, 1924, in Gowrie. He was a graduate of Gowrie High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Iowa State University. On Jan. 27, 1945, he married Clarice Nordholm in Gowrie. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

Mr. Sigurdson taught school in Bagley, Perry and Fort Dodge Senior High School before coming to Newton. He worked for the Maytag Company for 32 years and retired as training director in 1988. He enjoyed woodworking, swimming and walking. He was an avid fan of local high school and collegiate sports.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Maytag Management Club, Epsilon P. Tau National Honor Society, Kiwanis Club, YMCA board, American Legion Post 111, Junior Achievement founding member, Road to Recovery volunteer and City of Newton Planning and Zoning Commission for 15 years.

Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark Sigurdson and his fiancée, Jane Bledsoe of Lenexa, Kan.; a daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Gene Suhr of Renesselaer, Ind.; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Arthur Sigurdson.
