Charles William Shepard, 83, of 400 W. 16th St. S. died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, at USA Healthcare in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be in the veteran's section of Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call from 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will be available from 6 to 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted in his name to Boy's Town.

The son of Jesse Frank Shepard and Alice Mae Kelly, he was born July 21, 1921, in Centerville. He graduated from high school in Tama. On Sept. 9, 1944, he married Josephine Winifred Thomas in Kelvedon, Essex County, England. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, serving in Africa, England, France and Belgium. He was a life member of Newton VFW Post 1655 and Newton Elks Club, and a member of Izaak Walton League and Maytag Management Club. He worked as the head of security for the Maytag Company and retired Jan. 1, 1984, after 37 years. He was an avid golfer, getting a hole-in-one on hole 10 at Westwood Golf Course, was a Little League baseball coach and the first scoutmaster and Little League coach at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Charles Edward Shepard of Newton; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kathleen Louise and Ronald Green and Karen Sue Gulling, all of Newton; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Barbara Shepard of Newton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and five brothers.
