WINONA, Minn. -- Ralph D. "Dale" Smith, 88, of the Sauer Memorial Home in Winona, Minn., formerly of Newton, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004.

At his request, there will be no formal services. The body was cremated. Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Winona, Minn., handled arrangements.

The son of Ralph W. and Ellen (Carson) Smith, he was born Sept. 27, 1916, in Newton. On Aug. 26, 1946, he married Marjorie Boyle in Des Moines. He worked for Pioneer Seed Corn and from 1940 to 1981, he worked for Maytag Company as an industrial engineer. He moved from Colfax to Winona, Minn., in 1987.

Mr. Smith was a longtime member of the Methodist Church. He enjoyed outdoor activities, especially hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife; a brother, Leland Smith of Newton; a sister, Gladys Balmer of Colfax; a brother-in-law, John Boyle and his wife Joyce of Winona, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Hugh; and a sister, Mary Smith.
