Edmund "Ed" A. McCardell Sr., 95, of 3148 S. 12th Ave. W. died Thursday, Oct. 14, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A memorial service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Congregational United Church of Christ in Newton with the Rev. Michael Dack officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Visitation will follow the service at a place to be announced at the service.

Memorials will be accepted to The Salvation Army, Jasper County Animal Rescue League and Humane Society or to the donor's choice.

The son of Harry C. and Agnes G. (Ayer) McCardell, he was born Dec. 5, 1908, in Newton. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1928 and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1930 with a bachelor's of science degree. On June 20, 1931, he married Bernetta Kunau. He later married Marjorie G. Koelling on Nov. 18, 1983.

Mr. McCardell owned and operated Winpower from 1932 to 1976 and was president of Parsons. He was a member of Congregational United Church of Christ, Newton Rotary Club and Elks. He was president of the Newton Country Club, and a member of Izaak Walton League, Jasper County Historical Society, "I" Club and the Jasper County Animal Rescue League and Humane Society. He was devoted to his family and enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, golf, photography, gardening and traveling.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; a son, Edmund A. McCardell Jr. of Newton; a daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne and Roger Hershey of Newton; step-son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Kay Koelling of Bella Vista, Ark.; a step-daughter, Sue Ann Mohr of Lawrence, Kan.; five grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife and a sister, Ruth Horan.
