Jean A. Hurto, 84, of Newton died from complications resulting from a fractured hip Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at her home at Park Centre in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Newton with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church dining room. Burial of the cremains will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be held Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton, where the family will be present. Memorials will be accepted in her name or to First United Methodist Church in Newton, the New Horizon United Methodist Church in Melbourne or Project AWAKE.

The daughter of Ray Walter and Grace Mae (Marlenee) Harper Bailey, she was born Sept. 7, 1920, in Melbourne. She attended Melbourne Community School and graduated in 1938. During this time, she was employed at Diehl's Café in Melbourne, Marshall Office Supply, the Iowa Veterans' Home and Neiderhauser Airways, all in Marshalltown. She married Earl Nelson Hurto on July 8, 1944. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Hurto was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Newton, where she served on the Legal and Valuable Papers and Staff-Parish Relations committees and was a member of the MerriMates Sunday school class. She was a volunteer with Skiff Hosptial Auxiliary for more than 40 years, a member of Chapter AO, P.E.O., Theta Chi sorority, Kiwanis Kweens and the Woodrow Wilson Elementary School's savings stamp program. She enjoyed playing golf and bride, traveling, gardening and sewing. She was a member of the Jasper County Concert Association and the Jasper County Historical Society, worked in make-up for the Newton Community Theatre and was an officer in the annual Bailey family reunion.

Survivors include her husband, Earl; sons, Barry and Larry, both of Newton; two sisters-in-law, Verlee Bailey of Melbourne and Hazel Harper of Manly; two nieces; four nephews; several cousins and great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Roger Bailey; a sister, Neva Bailey; a half-brother, Gerald Harper; a half-sister, Margaret Reiss; and a nephew and a niece.
