Shirley A. Cooper, 69, of Newton died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Newton with the Rev. David Smiley officiating. Burial will be at Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton.

Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to First Baptist Church, Hospice of Jasper County or Skiff Home Care and may be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of Loren and Myrna (Cochran) Van Hoosen, she was born March 8, 1935, in Newton. She graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1953. On Aug. 30, 1963, she married C. L. "Lee" Cooper in Newton. She worked as a secretary for the Maytag Corporation for 40 years and retired in 1995.

Mrs. Cooper was an active member of First Baptist Church, a member of First Baptist Fellowship Board, J.C. Women's Bowling Association, The Newton Alumni Association, Toast Mistress and Jasper County Democrat Party. She enjoyed her family and cooking, gardening and flowers.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Craig and April Cooper of Kellogg; a daughter, Christine Norris and her fiancé, Tim Seaholm, both of Adel; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Tony and Janelle Cooper of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Teddy Van Hoosen of Newton and Charles and Sherry Van Hoosen of Altoona; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Mark Altemeier, Connie and John De Greef and Betty and Regan Brodersen, all of Newton, Janet and Monte Rinehart of Monroe and Diane and Mark Blackwood of Davenport; sister-in-law, Roma Ault of Mitchellville; son-in-law, Don Mettler of Newton; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a step-daughter, Nannette Lee Mettler.
