John Herman Brisel, 86, of 1105 E. 12th St. S. died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at Iowa Veterans Hospital in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with Lt. Ron Cook of The Salvation Army officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Memorials will be accepted in his name.

The son of Frank and Henrietta (Bunse) Brisel, he was born April 18, 1918, in rural Ira. He attended country school in the Ira area. He married Grace Hildebrand in Des Moines. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a mechanic at Allis Chalmers in Des Moines and also worked for Duke Hart and Hughes Tractor Equipment Company in Des Moines.

Mr. Brisel was a member of the Newton Salvation Army, attended First United Methodist Church and was a member of Newton V.F.W. Post No. 1655 and American Legion Post No. 111. He devoted his life to his family and enjoyed the outdoors.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Judy Brisel of Newton; two grandchildren; and a special friend, Irene Pierce of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a brother, Charlie; and two sisters, Rosalee and Mary.
