GRINNELL -- Dorothy Benesh, 84, of Grinnell died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Grinnell Christian Church with the Rev. John Epperson officiating. Burial will be at the Union Cemetery in Newton.

Friends may call at the Grinnell Christian Church after 4 p.m. today, where the family will be present at the church from 6 to 8 p.m. today. The church is located at 1331 Hobart Street in Grinnell. Memorials may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice, the American Cancer Society or to St. Francis Manor and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell 50112.

The daughter of Frank and Anna Wherry Benesh, she was born July 25, 1920, in Atkins. She attended school in Guernsey. On March 25, 1938, she married Chester M. Jones in Oskaloosa. The couple lived in Brooklyn. She was a member of the Southside Club of Brooklyn. In 1958, the family moved to Newton, where she worked at a variety store and for Spurgeon's Department Store for 30 years. She moved to St. Francis Manor in Grinnell in July 2004. She enjoyed raising parakeets and always had a large flower and vegetable garden. She also enjoyed sewing and quilting.

She is survived by two daughters, Maretta Grattan of Grinnell and Vy Tool-Christiansen of Rapid City, S.D.; one son, Wayne Jones of Indian Rock Beach, Fla.; one sister, Sarah Michalek of Victor; one brother, Loyal Benesh of Brooklyn; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Norlene DeSmidt-Williams.
