DES MOINES -- E. James "Jim" Bennett, 62, of Des Moines, formerly of Newton, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, located at 3700 Cottage Grove in Des Moines. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at the church, where the family will be available.

The son of Erskine F. and Vina (Goodhue) Bennett, he was born Dec. 27, 1941, in Newton. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1960 and received his juris doctor law degree from the University of Iowa in 1966. On Jan. 30, 1965, he married Virginia Cook in Newton. He was an attorney. He also was a secretary of the Maytag Corporation for 29 years and retired in 1999.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan E. Bennett and Shane Swanson of Vernon Hills, Ill.; a son and daughter-in-law, Edward J. Bennett and Margot Wickman-Bennett of Omaha, Neb.; four grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Carroll and Mary Jo Bennett of Newton; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Leland and Janet Cook of Newton; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tom and Janie Cook of Missoula, Mont.

He was preceded in death by his parents
