Stella J. Arends, 96, of Newton died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at Heritage Manor in Newton.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton with the Rev. Don Freeman, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church, officiating. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will be present form 6:30 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted to the United Presbyterian Church or Hospice of Jasper County.

The daughter of John C. Brodersen and Viola Proctor, she was born Aug. 26, 1908, in rural Newton. She attended Mt. Hope, a country school. On March 24, 1934, she married Emmert Arends. She worked for The Vernon Company and retired as a conveyer foreman. She enjoyed bowling and fishing.

Survivors include three nieces, Donna Lee Biddle of Des Moines, Joanne Forbes Whitney of Ankeny and Mary Brindza of Newton; a nephew, Ron Forbes of Newton; and many great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two sisters, Della McCuen and Helen Forbes.
