Claude M. Baker, 85, of Newton, formerly of Des Moines, died Tuesday, June 29, at USA Healthcare of Newton.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at New Testament Baptist Church in Des Moines with the Rev. James Holmes officiating. Burial will be at Lowan Cemetery in Runnells. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Memorials will be accepted to New Testament Baptist Church and may be left at the church the day of the service.

The son of John Henry and Elizabeth (Hensley) Baker, he was born Oct. 27, 1918, in Houston, Mo. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He married Vera Allen and lived in Des Moines for many years prior to moving to Newton in 1999. Mr. Baker was a mechanic for the Iowa Department of Transportation.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, John and Bev Baker of Ankeny; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers and three sisters. ~ Newton Daily News, Newton, IA, Tuesday, July 8, 2004
