An Old Citizen Dead

Theo. Bethel, an old citizen of Monroe, died at his home in Des Moines, last Tuesday morning. He came to Jasper County in the fall of 1852. In 1881, he moved to Des Moines. For many years Mr. Bethel was a merchant in Monroe. He was a highly esteemed and useful citizen. He was born at Wrightstown, Ohio, Dec. 10, 1825.

For many years he has been a member of the Congregational Church, and was a zealous worker for the public good along the lines of Christian reform during the years of his active life. He took sides with the abolitionists and temperance workers in his early life. At his request, Rev. C. C. Harrah, of our city, preached the funeral sermon.

The family and friends went in special car from Des Moines to Monroe on Thursday morning, where the body of Mr. Bethel was laid to rest in Monroe's beautiful cemetery. He leaves a widow and one son and daughter. ~ The Newton Record, Newton, IA, Friday, May 3, 1895, Page 1, Column 5
