Took His Own Life Suicide of Kellogg Citizen

In a fit of Despondency, Joseph Bennett Kills Himself

Joseph Bennett, a citizen of this county for many years, committed suicide by taking strychnine, at Kellogg, last Friday evening. At the inquest held by Coroner Reynolds, Saturday, it was shown that he had purchased the poison, as he claimed, for the purpose of killing rats.

After the family had been seated at the supper table, Mr. Bennett suddenly became sick, and acknowledged to his family what he had done. Of course medical aid was swiftly summoned and every effort possible made to counteract the deadly poison, but it was too late, the drug had accomplished its fatal work, and the poor man expired after suffering untold agony.

It seemed that Mr. Bennett had been a victim to the opium habit for a number of years, and at times been subject to fits of despondency.

He leaves a wife and several children.

He formerly lived in Richland Township, afterwards in Rock Creek, and for the last six or seven years in Kellogg.

He was a Christian man, a member of the M. E. Church for nearly a half-century. His age was 73 years. ~ The Newton Record Friday, October 4, 1895
