Colfax’s Dr. Boyd
Widely Known Medic Stricken With Heart Attack Early Today
Colfax and Jasper county lost a widely known citizen this morning when Dr. Frank E. Boyd, 82, Colfax physician for more than a half century died suddenly from a heart attack.
Coroner Ralph Toland said Dr. Boyd suffered a heart attack about 6:30 o’clock as he was carrying ashes from his home to the alley. Mr. Toland said he fell dead in his garage after carrying some ashes to the alley and was on his way back to the home.
Mrs. Burtress Baker, his sister and housekeeper, discovered the body when she went to investigate after Dr. Boyd had failed to answer her calls for him to come in for breakfast.
Dr. Boyd was one of Jasper county’s most colorful residents. His interests were varied and many, although his first love was medicine. A practicing physician until his death today, he had served the aches and pains of humanity for more than 57 years – in addition to bringing hundreds of new citizens into the world. As Dr. Boyd once stated, “I lost count, but it’s in the hundreds.”
Banker
In addition to being a successful doctor, he was interested in finance and was president of the Colfax First national Bank for 13 years before selling his interest and retiring from the banking business May 6, 1943. In 1933 Dr. Boyd served on a committee of the Iowa Bankers association.
On March 13, 1943, Dr. Boyd was honored by the Iowa and Jasper county Medical Societies for having completed 50 years in the practice of medicine and was presented a gold pen in honor of the occasion.
It has often been said Colfax without Dr. Boyd wouldn’t seem natural and as the news of his death spread today that statement was echoed in many quarters.
The fiery individualist was known to everyone in Colfax and for miles around. His pungent commentaries on any subject – politics, medicine or banking were traditionally awaited at any gathering he attended. Dr. Boyd could always be counted upon to say something – and he would say it emphatically.
Son of a Doctor
His interest in medicine carried on to a second generation. His son, Dr. Frank E. Boyd Jr., is practicing medicine in Flandreau, S.D., and during the war served with the Army as a medical officer.
Dr. Boyd received his medical degree at the University of Iowa with the class of 1893. He immediately began practicing in Little Sioux, Ia., where he remained for 10 years. He then returned to Colfax where he lived until his death.
Dr. Boyd was born on a farm north of Colfax Aug. 9, 1868, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Boyd. His father served with distinction for three years with the Union Army during the Civil War.
Dr. Boyd was first married to the former Agnes Murray of Little Sioux, who died a number of years ago. He later married Mrs. Alice Little of Prairie City, who died Dec. 14, 1949.
Dr. Boyd was active in community and civic circles and was a staunch member of the Republican party. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Colfax Presbyterian church.
In addition to his son, two daughters, Mrs. Marjorie Pierson, La Porte, Ia., and Mrs. Virginia Eyerly, Chicago, survive. The three children were expected to arrive in Colfax later today.
The body is at the Bumgardner Funeral Home in Colfax. Time of services has not been set pending the arrival of the family.
