Christopher Bergman Dies; Pioneer Resident
Prominent Retired Farmer Dies Early Today at Hospital
Christopher W. Bergman, 85, retired Newton farmer, died at the Skiff Memorial hospital at 5:30 o’clock this morning.
Mr. Bergman was born in Malaka township Nov. 29, 1864 and was engaged in the farming business until he retired and moved to Newton and lived at 523 First avenue West with Mrs. Bergman until his death.
A member of one of Newton and Jasper county’s pioneer families, he was not only successful in the farming business but was regarded highly as a citizen of Newton. He was always interested in the civic progress of Newton and the county.
Mr. Bergman was a patient at the Skiff hospital since last March.
He was the son of William and Louise Bergman who came to the United States from Germany to make their home when America was beginning to grow westward.
He was an active member of St. John’s Evangelical church and was educated in the Jasper county schools.
Mr. Bergman was preceded in death by one daughter, Gertrude, who passed away in 1934. Six brothers and three sisters also preceded him in death.
Mr. Bergman was married to Miss Emma Wehrman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wehrman of Malaka township, at the Wehrman home on Mar. 23, 1892 in a ceremony performed by Rev. Scheindeman of St. John’s Evangelical church.
The day following the marriage they moved to their farm 14 miles northeast of Newton, which had been in the Bergman family for 75 years, and where they resided until they moved to Newton in 1913.
Mr. and Mrs. Bergman celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary at the home here on Mar. 22, 1942, and with an open house at which 125 friends and relatives attended.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Elsie Enochs of Newton; June Bergman of Washington, D.C.; one sister, Mrs. Bert Benjamin, Oak Park, Ill., and two grandsons Marvin and Max Enochs of Laurel.
Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at two o’clock at the Johnson-Murdoch Funeral Home with Rev. J. Wesley Pierson officiating. Burial will be in the Newton Union cemetery.

Rites for Chris Bergman Will Be Held on Monday
Funeral services for Christopher W. Bergman, 85, retired Newton farmer who died Friday morning, will be held at two o’clock Monday afternoon at the Johnson-Murdoch Funeral Home.
Rev. J. Wesley Pierson, pastor of the First Congregational church, will officiate. Burial will be at the Newton Union cemetery.
Mrs. R. L. Jackson will serve as organist at the rites, and Marion Welle will be soloist.
Pallbearers will be Fred Schnathorst, William Schnathorst, Ralph Bergman, Harry Bergman, Bill Bergman and James Dodge.
Mr. Bergman was a member of one of Newton and Jasper county’s pioneer families. Mr. Bergman always took an interest in the civic progress of Newton. His brothers and sisters, all but one of whom preceded him in death, were also active in the business and civic affairs of the community.
Survivors include his wife, the former Emma Wehrman; two daughters, Mrs. Elsie Enochs of Newton and June Bergman of Washington, D.C.; one sister, Mrs. Bert Benjamin of Oak Park, Ill., and two grandsons, Arvin and Max Enochs of Laurel.
