Mrs. Abbie Beckman Died Saturday After Long Illness
Mrs. Abbie Beckman, 90, died at 11:30 p.m. Saturday, December 6, 1958 in the Shaw Nursing Home in Newton where she had been a patient since May 21st. Death resulted from complications following the fracture of her right hip in a fall October 3rd.
She had been a resident of Colfax since May of 1920, coming here with her daughter, Mrs. S. E. Tennant and family. After seventeen years in the Tennant home she maintained her own apartment with the assistance of her daughter until failure of health made it impossible.
She was born June 20, 1868 in Elkhorn Grove, Carrol County, Ill., the daughter of William and Hanorrah LaGrant. At the age of 12 she moved with the parents to Grundy Center, Iowa, where she lived until 1880 when the family went to Bonilla, South Dakota to homestead land.
October 5, 1885 she was united in marriage to Otto W. Beckman in Bonilla, South Dakota. They “set up” housekeeping on a farm near Grundy Center, Iowa, where they resided until his death June 2, 1911. She remained in Grundy Center until coming to Colfax to reside.
She was a fifty year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and of the Presbyterian Church, being one of the most regular attendants at Sunday School and church as long as health permitted. She also took an active part in the work of the church societies. In her early life she also held office in the Pythian Sister Lodge, the W.C.T.U. and the Service Star Legion organizations.
She was the mother of four sons, William E. and Fritz O. of Grundy Center, John A. of Davenport, Herbert H. of Hampton and one daughter (Ernstena) Mrs. S. E. Tennant of Colfax, all of whom survive. A sister, Mrs. C. E. Wright of Topeka, Kansas, fourteen grandchildren, twenty seven great grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews also survive. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
In her almost a century of living, she touched many lives and many were abetted by the wisdom of her comments and her example of courage, patience and unfaltering faith in adversity.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon, December 9th 1958 from the Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Frank P. Hladky officiating.
