Rites Held for Walter J. Telfer
Walter Joseph Telfer, 82, lifelong resident of Prairie City, died Sunday at Clearview Manor in Prairie City.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Prairie City.
The Rev. Clifford Knight, pastor of the church, conducted the services. Burial was in Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City.
Walters Funeral Home in Prairie City handled arrangements.
Survivors are his wife, Myrna; eight daughters, Mrs. Berlin (Edith) Moore of Kandiz, Ky., Mrs. Roy (Lois) Stoner of Colorado Springs, Colo., Mrs. Herchel (Wilma) Briles of Colfax, Mrs. Howard (Elsie) Fatka of Polk City, Mrs. David (Marilyn) Elrod of Prairie City, Mrs. Robert (Myrna) Schmitt of Collins, Mrs. Glen (Grace) Shuey of Colfax and Miss Trula Telfer of Des Moines; three sons, Ronald Telfer of Prairie City, Robert Telfer of Colfax and Wilbur Telfer of Prairie City; 27 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, a brother, his first wife, Mildred Offill, and three children, Erma, Merwyn and Vera.
The son of Robert and Ruth Rutherford Telfer, he was born Mar. 22, 1891 in Prairie City and attended the State University of Iowa at Iowa City.
He was married to Mildred Offill Dec. 19, 1915. He was married to Myrna Bradshaw, July 6, 1932 at Plattsburg.
The organist, Mrs. W. R. Burns accompanied the soloist William Van Zee.
Bearers were Bruce Moore, Jim Briles, Jerry Briles, Don Fatka, Ron Fatka, Paul Elrod.
