Services Held For Mrs. Marvel Beardmore
Funeral services for Mrs. Ross (Marvel) Beardmore, 64, were held Monday, August 21, 1972 at 2 p.m. at the Christian Methodist Church in Ira. The Rev. Morris Hay conducted the services. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery at Baxter. Mrs. Beardmore died August 18 at Iowa City, Iowa.
Pallbearers were Henry Comer, Cecil Carpenter, Max Bucklin, Robert State, Howard Taylor and Arnold Hunter. Mrs. Donald Akins, organist, accompanied the singers, Mrs. Max Butler and Mrs. Douglas Deutsch, who sang “How Great Thou Art” and “Good Night and Good Morning”. Flowers were cared for by Mrs. Sam Miller and Mrs. Howard Taylor. Boyd Nickell Funeral Home in Baxter was in charge of arrangements.
Marvel Poyner was born March 15, 1908 at La Porte City, Iowa, the daughter of Grover and Nancy Poyner. She was married to Ross Beardmore November 17, 1929 in Des Moines. She was raised and educated in La Porte City and attended Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught for 27 months in Black Hawk, Benson and Jasper Counties. In 1935 she was employed as Postmistress at Ira and served in that position until she retired in 1971. She lived in Ira until her death. She was correspondent for Baxter, Colfax and Newton newspapers.
She was a member of Wesleyan Methodist Church in La Porte City, was a charter member of the Ira Grange, and was a member of the National League of Postmasters. She was very active in various community affairs.
Survivors include her husband, her mother, a daughter, Mrs. John (Joann) Scott of Cedar Falls, a son, Clayton Charles of Ft. Sheridan, Ill., 2 grandchildren, a half-brother, John Poyner of Skogie, Oklahoma and a half-sister, Mrs. William Ferguson of Kalispell, Mont. Her father and a half-sister preceded her in death.
