Mrs. Sarah Johns Died Dec. 18th
Mrs. Lazarus (Sarah) Johns, 88, longtime resident of this city, died Thursday evening, Dec. 18, 1969, at the Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. She had spent the past few months in Iowa City in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Richard Hootman.
The daughter of William and Ann Oliver Williams, she was born Dec. 13, 1881, at Ynyshir, Glamorganshire, Wales.
She was married to Lazarus Johns on March 17, 1901, at Pontypridd in Wales. They came to Colfax from Wales in 1914.
Her husband preceded her in death in 1950.
Surviving are a son, William James Johns of Oskaloosa; two daughters, Mrs. Arleigh (Gwyneth) Whitten of Omaha, Neb., and Mrs. Richard (Margaret) Hootman of Iowa City; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Johns had a beautiful singing voice and was always willing to use her talent for the enjoyment of others. She often sang in the Welsh language.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Colfax and the Order of Eastern Star.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 21st at 2 p.m. in Walters Funeral Home at Colfax.
Rev. Roy Allen Wilson, minister of the Presbyterian Church, officiated.
Mrs. S. E. Tennant was the organist.
The bearers were: Frank B. Evans, Mickey Rosenbaum, Charles Coulter, Richard Hootman, Stanley Swinton and Arleigh Whitten.
Mrs. Kenneth Bauer and Mrs. Delmar Davis were in charge of the flowers.
Burial was in the Colfax Cemetery.
