Harry G. Duncan, 72, Died Early Friday Morning
Harry Gardner Duncan, 72, longtime resident of Colfax, died early Friday morning, July 31, 1964 at the Skiff Memorial Hospital at Newton. He had been hospitalized 14 weeks at the time of death. Mr. Duncan had suffered a stroke the latter part of April and had been in failing health since that time.
The son of Edd and Mary Gardner Duncan, he was born at Greencastle, March 9, 1892.
On November 11, 1941, he was married to Mary Wheatcraft.
Mr. Duncan was a farmer and for several years was an employee of the Denniston and Partridge Lumber Company in Colfax before his retirement. After retirement, and until his health failed, he served as a part time policeman in Colfax.
Surviving are his wife, Mary; a son, Max D., of Des Moines; a daughter, Mrs. Mary McCarthy of Phoenix, Ariz.; a step-son, William Wheatcraft of Hayward, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Howard (Agnes) Belch of Paradise, Calif. and Mrs. Ruth Moeckley of Chico, Calif.; and two brothers, Darwin of Colfax and Donald of Knoxville.
Also surviving are four grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Mr. Duncan was highly esteemed by residents here, always willing to lend a helping hand and do a kindly deed for those about him.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 3rd, at the Colfax Presbyterian church. The Rev. Virgil V. Smith, minister of the church, conducted the services.
Music was furnished by Miss Eleanor Howell, organist.
Bearers were George Clippinger, Roscoe Maggard, Clifford Marquis, Earl Shields, William Snetselaar and Richard Williams.
Taking care of the flowers were Mrs. Keith Bell, Miss Wilda Byal, Mrs. Bert Vardo and Mrs. Paul Wadsworth.
Burial was in the Newton Union Cemetery, Newton, Iowa.
