Mrs. B. A. Brown Died Sunday at Newton
Mrs. B. A. (Angelina Theresa) Brown, 88, a resident of this city for over thirty years, died Sunday night, December 29, 1963, at the Nelson Manor at Newton, where she had resided the past 27 months. Mrs. Brown had suffered a gradual decline in health over the past few years and had suffered a stroke Saturday morning.
The daughter of John and Jane Shackelton Longdin, she was born May 4, 1875 at Mexbourgh, Yorkshire, England. She came to the United States when 8 years of age, first residing at Slayton, Minn., for a few years, then going to Otley, Iowa, making her home there for 15 years. The past 53 years she has made her home in the Newton and Colfax communities.
Mrs. Brown was the last surviving member of a family of nine.
She was married to I. M. Harp at Otley, Iowa, June 6, 1894. Mr. Harp died February 27, 1922.
On September 25, 1929 she was married to B. A. Brown at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, and had resided at Colfax since that time.
Mrs. Brown was a member of the Colfax Presbyterian Church and Rose of Sharon Chapter No. 9, Order of the Eastern Star.
Of a charming personality and with a ready wit, she was a devoted wife and mother, and gave untiringly of her effort in the work of the women’s groups of the Presbyterian Church as well as living her Christianity every day. She will be missed by her family and her many, many friends acquired through the years.
Those surviving are her husband, three sons, Royce L. Harp of West Frankfort, Ill., Clarence C. Harp of Newton, Jack N. Harp, of Dallas, Tex.; two step daughters, Mrs. Barbara Monroe of Colfax and Mrs. Enid Alsup of White Plains, N. Y.; 4 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren and 5 step grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 1st at 10 a.m. at the Colfax Presbyterian Church. Rev. Virgil Smith, minister of the church, conducted the services.
Mrs. Larry Hanel of Des Moines was the soloist and Miss Eleanor Howell the organist.
Bearers: John Blatterbaurer, Arnold W. Kunze, Robert Hopkins, H. P. Lockhart, George Loar, Arnold Myhra.
Honorary Bearers: H. E. Bell, Earl Plummer, Eugene Riley, Harp Smith, S. E. Tennant, George S. Weirick.
Flower Committee: Mrs. Raymond Fletcher, Mrs. H. P. Lockhart, Mrs. Harp Smith.
Burial was in Newton Union Cemetery.
