Thomas Hummel Dies At Newton
Thomas Hummel, 77, a resident of Newton since 1922, died Sunday in Skiff Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Johnson Funeral Chapel at Newton.
The Rev. Raymond Barnett, minister of the First Christian Church conducted the services. Burial was in Palo Alto Cemetery.
Survivors are three sons, Kenneth and Louie of Newton and Thomas J. Jr. of Traverse City, Mich.; a chief warrant officer in the U.S. Coast Guard; a daughter, Mrs. Preston (Pauline) Brown of Minneapolis, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Rosa Snook and Mrs. Arthur (Kathryn) Hoffert of Newton, Mrs. Gail (Leona) Engle of Baxter and Mrs. Agnes Muck of Colfax; and two brothers, Edwin of Colfax and Orlin of Pella.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife in 1964, a son, a daughter, a brother and three sisters.
Mr. Hummel was a member of the First Christian Church.
He was a machinist at the Maytag Co. before his retirement in 1958.
The son of John and Anna Robison Hummel, he was born Feb. 19, 1891 in Jasper County near Monroe and was educated in Jasper County schools.
He was married to Dora Cooper Sept. 3, 1913 in Des Moines.
