Funeral Services Held Tuesday for the Late Allen Jeffries at Mingo
Allen Jeffries, son of Milton and Elizabeth Jeffries, was born in Henry county, Indiana February 10th, 1840. When 2 years of age, his parents moved to Kosciusko county Ind., where he grew to manhood.
In September, 1861, he answered his country’s call and enlisted in Co I 30th regiment Indiana, Volunteers Infantry, and served for three years.
In November, 1868, he was united in marriage to Rebecca Elliott. In October, 1869, they came to Iowa and settled near what is now Ira, which with the exception of five years spent in Colfax, Iowa, has since been his home.
Five children were born to this union, two of whom survive him, Curtis E., of Ira, and Francis H., of Ely, Nevada. He also leaves one brother, Francis M., of Ira, Iowa. Also a half brother and sister, Mr. S. O. Jeffries of Syracuse, Ind., and Mrs. W. F. Armington of Leesburg, Ind.
Mrs. Jeffries preceded him to her reward in July 1896. Mr. Jeffries died Nov. 17, 1913 at the home of his sons, Curtis, in Ira, aged 71 years, 9 months, and 17 days.
Mr. Jeffries was a man of deep convictions and stood for eight principles. He was a member of the E. H. Keys Post G.A.R. No. 511.
How well he fell asleep, Like some proud river widening toward the sea, Calmly and grandly, silently and deep; Life joined Eternity.
The funeral services were conducted from the Union chapel at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, November 18th, by the Rev. Grigsby, pastor of the M. E. church at Mingo and Ira. And at the grave by the members of the E. H. Keys Post G.A.R. No. 511.
Interment was made in the cemetery close by the church.
A large company of friends and neighbors of the deceased were present to pay their respects in the deceased.
