The funeral services for the late James A. Laird were held in the Congregational church yesterday afternoon at 5 o’clock, conducted by Rev. John Potter, assisted by Rev. A. B. Appleby and the Masonic Lodge. The music was furnished by Mesdames O. N. Wagley, Charles Griebeling, George S. Davis, Miss Florence Finch and E. L. Early, accompanied by Robert McGregor.
James Laird was born in Mercer county, Pennsylvania, February 24, 1832. When he was still a small boy, he moved with his parents to Ohio, where, in 1852, he was married to Miss Sarah Jane Umphrey. They came to Iowa in 1861, and, in 1862, he enlisted in the 27th Iowa Infantry, serving until he was mustered out at the close of the war.
Mr. Laird was the father of eight children, five of whom are living and were in attendance at the funeral today, – Mrs. Martha Broughland of Kolo, Iowa (sic); Mrs. Mary Elwood, of Omaha; Mrs. Minda Miller of Gresha, Nebraska; Willis Laird of Atlantic; and Lester Laird of Indianapolis.
Mr. Laird was a member of the Congregational church. He was a Christian gentleman, a true friend, a good neighbor, and a respected citizen, and his death brings a loss to the community.
