Jasper County Pioneer Dead
Robert Daniel of Prairie City Buried Last Friday
Robert Woodson Daniel was born in the state of Virginia May 26, 1843, and passed away at his home in Prairie City June 20, 1922, aged 79 years and 25 days.
With his parents, Mr. Daniel when a child moved to Pike county, Missouri, and there his boyhood and young manhood days were spent.
When the call for men was made at the outbreak of the Civil War, Mr. Daniel answered in person, enlisting in the 3rd Missouri Cavalry and serving a period of almost four years.
During the term of service he ranked as Sergeant.
Mr. Daniel was a member of the Christian church of Prairie City and his life speaks well of his profession as a follower of Christ.
On January 18, 1866, he was married to Margaret Ann Hemphill. In the year of 1870 they moved to a farm northeast of Prairie City where they lived until the year of 1902, at which time they moved to town, their last earthly abiding place. Five children were born to this union, three passing away in infancy.
Mrs. Ella Roberts passed away only a short time ago. Mrs. Lily Walker, of Newton, is the only remaining child.
Besides the daughter he is survived by five grandchildren; four great grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. Daniel answered the summons seven years ago.
The church will miss Mr. Daniel’s presence and gentle spirit. The manner was typical of the life he lived. He was kind, gentle and thoughtful in speech and conduct; his life was fruitful and yet unpretentious. It was a joy to be in his presence and feel the inspiration of his genial nature and companionship. Words of praise and kindness are spoken by his neighbors and friends. One of the greatest joys of life is do so live that earth is glad for your living and sorry when you have to leave. This can be said of Mr. Daniel. He was loved by all and is mourned by all who knew him.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church on Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. C. R. Strawn and Rev. I. J. Young.
Interment was made in West View cemetery.
