George M. Hunter Dies in Wichita
Services For Former Resident Will Be Held Here Tomorrow Morning
George M. Hunter, 69, of Wichita, Kan., died at a hospital there Sunday morning at 8:00 o’clock, following a major operation, according to word received here by relatives, and the body will arrive in Newton tomorrow morning at 7:55 o’clock, for burial. Services will be held tomorrow morning at 10:00 o’clock at the Morgan Funeral home, with the Rev. W. R. Moore, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, in charge. Interment will be in the Newton Union cemetery.
Mr. Hunter was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. H. E. Hunter, pioneer doctor of Newton and the husband of Miss Stella Buchanan, formerly of Newton. He left here in about 1881 for Omaha, residing there for 19 years and returning to a farm near Baxter in 1900. After a short residence in that vicinity, the family moved to Wichita, where he has been engaged as superintendent of the stockyard and in the real estate business.
He is survived by his wife and two daughters, who will arrive here tomorrow morning and seven cousins, Charles P. and J. W. Hunter of Newton, Mrs. A. W. Grafton of Des Moines, Mrs. C. V. Fisher of Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Nellie Hunter Miller of San Jose, Calif., Miss Mary Hunter of Seattle, Wash., and Harry Hunter of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. H. E. Hunter and a sister, Mrs. Carrie Hunter Stubbs. A niece, Mrs. John Wooden of Des Moines, daughter of Mrs. Stubbs, survives.

Funeral rites for George M. Hunter, 69, of Wichita, Kans., who died there last Sunday following a major operation, were conducted at 10:00 o’clock this morning at the Morgan Funeral home by Rev. W. R. Moore, pastor of the First Presbyterian church. Interment was in the Newton Union cemetery.
Eugene Burton, accompanied by Miss Ruth Campbell at the piano, sang two selections, “Rock of Ages” and “No Night There.” Pallbearers were C. P Hunter, D. L. Clark, John and Thomas Buchanan of Newton, H. M. Steinbushal of Wichita, and John Wooden of Des Moines.
George Miller Hunter was born in Newton, Ia., Dec. 7, 1861, son of Dr. H. E. and Sarah Hunter. He was married to Stella Buchanan Feb. 12, 1890, and to this union two daughters were born, Irene, Mrs. H. M. Steinbushal of Wichita, Kan.; and Helen, Mrs. E. H. Hall of Orange, M.J. One son died in infancy.
George Hunter’s boyhood was spent in Newton. He later went to Omaha, Nebr., where he lived a number of years, before returning to a farm near Baxter. After a short residence there, he moved to Wichita, where he has made his home for the last 34 years. He died Sunday morning Sept. 13, 1931 at the Wellsley hospital in Wichita.
