*** evening at six o’clock Clarence Johnson, who for years has represented the Independent Cracker Company of Davenport, succumbed to an apoplectic *** at Colfax.

For a number of years ago Mr. Johnson has been in failing health, and last ***mber suffered a stroke of paralysis. He soon rallied, and since then has been confined to his bed although *** helpless. During all these months he had the tender care of his faithful wife and many physicians have been consulted in hopes that he would get permanent relief.

*** years ago Mr. and Mrs. Johnson and daughter, Coleen, came from their former home in Mitchellville to reside in Newton, spending two years here at the Churchill Hotel. They then went to Grinnell to live. Last week Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were guests of friends in Newton and from here went to Colfax, **** at the home of Mrs. Tom Davis, **** of Mrs. Johnson, his death occurred ***.

Wednesday Mrs. Johnson in company with Mrs. Charles Seeberger of this city spent the day in Des Moines, but returned to Colfax that night. The next she again joined Mrs. Seeberger in the city and spent a very happy *** she had left Mr. Johnson feeling better than he had for a long time. *** was the heart-breaking news his friends had to bear to her when she arrived in Colfax, a little after six, a very great shock.

Coleen, who is attending St. Catherine’s at Davenport, passed through Newton this morning to Colfax. Mrs. Seeberger and Mrs. Willis McColloms joined her here and accompanied her to the Davis home, where the mother was anxiously awaiting the daughter’s arrival.

Mr. Johnson had many friends here, as well as all over the state, who esteemed him highly and who will hear of his death with regret and sorrow.

The funeral will be held tomorrow, Sunday, at 1:30 o’clock for the T. Davis home in Colfax and the interment will be at Mitchellville. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, Friday, March 22, 1907, Page 1, Column 1
