Was born in Hatborough, Pa., March 2, 1830. At an early age he came to Iowa, at Lisbon, in which state, on December 14, 1851, he was united by marriage with Susanna Hahn, of Mount Vernon. The fruits of this union were Dr. West, of San Francisco, California; Mrs. Adela V. Weaver, of Colfax,, Iowa; W. L. West, deceased; Mrs. Mary Robbins, of Colfax, Iowa; Joseph West, deceased; and Mrs. Susan Acnon, of Denver, Colorado.
In the year 1869, the mother of his children passed to her reward, and two years later, April 19, 1871, he was united with Amanda Bates, of Colfax, Iowa, who with their one son, Frank B. of Colfax, survives him. With the exception of 12 years – from 1852 to 1864 when he was sojourning in California, deceased resided in Iowa, and for the past 25 years, almost continually, Colfax has been his home. Always since his years of manhood began Mr. West was a consistent Christian and member of the M.E. church, his faith being exemplified in his daily life – in the always tender indulgence of a loving father, a faithful loving companion to the wife gone before, and to the afflicted one he leaves behind truly for years a nurse and father as well as faithful ministering angel.
