L. Benjamin Lyday was born in Washington County, Md., April 1, 1837, and departed this life August 27, 1906, at Indianapolis, Ind., aged 69 years, 4 months and 26 days.

In the year 1856 he left his native home and came to Springfield, Ohio. After residing in that city a few years he departed for Bucyrus, Ohio. At that city he engaged in the mercantile business for several years. From the latter city he turned his footsteps westward and settled in Jasper County, Iowa, in the town of Kellogg, engaging once more in the mercantile business.

He then moved to Texas and resided with one whom you all know and one who bestowed upon a kind and loving father all the attention of a true and faithful daughter, Mrs. R. P. Smith, residing at her home for over seventeen years.

A few weeks ago Mr. Lyday was in this city enjoying himself with his many friends. On this journey his daughter accompanied him. Anxious to continue his visits east, he started on his journey to tarry with his brother-in-law, Mr. B. F. Lauck and family at Bucyrus, Ohio. Remaining there a few days with these kind friends he continued his journey to meet his daughter. He was then homeward bound, but the journey was heavenward, not earthward. At the city of Indianapolis the Master came and called to him the spirit of this upright, perfect man took its flight to meet those who have preceded him to that land, “Where sickness, sorrow, pain and death are felt and feared no more.”

While residing in Bucyrus, Ohio, he was united in marriage to Miss Nettie Lauck, who departed this life in the year 1901. They were blessed with three children, two of whom have passed over unto the other side, and one daughter yet living, Mrs. R. P. Smith, of Texas. He leaves one brother, Wm. Lyday, of this city, and a sister, Mrs. Mattie Hukill, of Pittsburg, Penn.

The funeral was held from the home of Mrs. Mary Lyday this morning at 10 o’clock, Rev. W. Dieffenbach of the Lutheran Church officiating. His text was Psalms 37:37, “Mark the perfect man and behold the upright for the end of that man is peace.” A very large number of relatives and friends were in attendance. Interment was in the Newton Cemetery where his wife and two children lie buried. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, Thursday, August 30, 1906, Page 4, Column 3
