SUMPTER

There have been quite a number of deaths, as many as four in this vicinity in the last week. Not having the particulars of more than two we cannot give them. We are sorry people are so remiss in giving us such information. We give an account of one in the words of a communication elsewhere. The other on which we have knowledge, is the death of Blufe Sumpter, who was killed by the caving in of a well beyond John F. Dixon’s, on the road to Colfax in the edge of the sand ridge. The well caved in suddenly burying him to the depth of four feet. He was a large, powerful man and was found standing upright when the earth was removed. He was dead of course when taken from his unexpected grave. Such a death must shock anyone. Something, in us all, shudders at the idea of being called to try the unknown without a moment’s warning. He leaves a family and many friends to mourn his sudden and unnatural death.
