Life Story of Walter Mathies
Walter H. Mathies, 67, a resident of Newton for several years, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the Veterans hospital in Des Moines after a lingering illness.
Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 6, at the First Methodist church in Newton. The Rev. Arthur V. Long, minister of the church, conducted the services. Burial was in Monroe cemetery.
Mr. Mathies is survived by his wife; a daughter, Lorraine Mathies of Santa Monica, Calif.; three step-children, Mrs. Iris Hemphill and Mrs. H. A. Smith of Des Moines and Burton Zerley of Monroe, and four grandchildren.
Mr. Mathies was a member of the First Methodist church. He was also a member of the American Legion.
Born in Grand Junction, Colo., July 2, 1894, Mr. Mathies came to Jasper county as a child. He was educated in Monroe schools.
Mr. Mathies served in the Army during World War I.
He was married to Mrs. Hattie Zerley in Monroe in 1943.
Mr. Mathies was an insurance agent for many years and also was associated with the Sonatone hearing aid company.
