Death of Thos. S. Meek
The body of Thos. S. Meek was brought to Newton Monday evening, his death having occurred on Friday night in the insane ward of the Anamosa Penitentiary. Brief funeral services, conducted by Rev. J. C. Willits of the M. E. Church were held at the home of Mrs. Wm. Hixson, Tuesday morning, after which the remains were taken to Adamson Grove Cemetery and laid to rest beside his parents.
Tom Meek, as he was known here, was born in Adamson Grove in 1862, and lived in this county until he was 23 years of age having taught school for some time in Vandalia. He was a son of Levi N. and Ruth Meek, early settlers in the county. He was principal of the schools at Youngstown, near Des Moines, two years and at Lower Agency, another Des Moines suburb, for three years. He was married to Miss Coral Glenn in Polk City in 1891, who with a little son four years old survive him. About a year ago a dark shadow came into his life was accused of a crime of which he claimed his innocence and in which claim many of this friends firmly believe. Brooding over his trouble, his mind, already weakened by an attack of typhoid fever, gave entirely away. Only four weeks ago he was sent to the insane ward of the penitentiary at Anamosa, where death came to his release. It is a sad ending of a life, which but a short time ago was so full of promise. But Tom Meek is dead, and the Great Judge will decide his guilt or innocence. Let us forget his mistakes and remember only his many noble traits of character. For the lonely young widow and her fatherless boy the tenderest sympathy is felt by everybody. The Newton (IA) Record Thursday, December 28, 1899
