Mrs. Geo. Avery died Tuesday afternoon after a long illness at her home on East Main Street. The funeral was held at the home this afternoon.

We regret that an extended obituary notice is crowded out this week. ~ The Newton Record, Thursday, September 22, 1898 Page 8, Column 4.

Died at her home in this city, after a painful illness of many months, Mrs. George Avery, aged 75 years.

Mrs. Avery’s maiden name was Mary Ann McPhillips. She was born in County Formanac, Ireland, 1833, where her early life was spent, coming to America with friends in 1841, and locating in Rock Island, Ill., where she was married to Wesley Giles in 1846. To them were born three children, two of whom survive her ­ Wm. Giles and Mrs. Harry Stone, both residing here. Her husband died in 1857, and after a widowhood of seven years, she was united in marriage to George Avery, in 1864. Three years later they moved to Jasper County, and since that time have made their home in this city of vicinity. She united with the M. E. Church in 1873, and by precept and example showed to all around her the pure Christian spirit, which actuated her everyday life. She had long been a great sufferer, but she bore it all with resignation to the Master’s will.

The funeral services were held at the home on East Main St., at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon conducted by Rev. C. V. Cowan and attended by a large number of neighbors and friends. The music was by a select quartette from the M. E. Church choir. The pallbearers were Mother Avery’s six grandsons, Wesley, William, Fred, Otis, Chris and Harry Giles. ~ The Newton Record September 29, 1898
