KELLOGG -- Funeral services for Grace Auten, 98, of Kellogg, will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Morris Hurd, pastor of Kellogg United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be at Slagel Cemetery in rural Newton.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home where family will be present from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorials to Pleasant View United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society will be accepted.

Mrs. Auten died of heart failure, Sunday, March 19, [2000] at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

The daughter of C. Frank and Maude P. Phillips Adams, she was born May 2, 1901, in Killduff. She graduated from Newton High School in 1920 and attended Iowa State Teachers College and Drake University. She married Jay M. Auten June 4, 1927 in Killduff.

A lifelong resident of Jasper County and resident of Kellogg since 1922, Mrs. Auten worked as a school teacher at Buena Vista No. 1 Country School for seven years, then as a substitute teacher for a few years and in 1956 she returned to teaching full-time as a 5th grade teacher at Kellogg Elementary School before retiring in 1970. She was a member of the Pleasant View United Methodist Church, Richland Grange, Jasper County Senior Citizens and Silver Threads.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, J. Morris and Judith of Schaumberg, Ill.; a daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and John Berthelsen of Kellogg; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Evelyn Renaud of Newton. ~ Newton Daily News March 20, 2000

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a daughter.
