Louise Goodwin McKlveen of Edina, Minn., died at N.C. Little Hospice in Edina, Jan. 1, 2018. Louise was 103 years of age.

Louise was born Oct. 1, 1914. in Baxter, to Jennie C. Goodwin and Edwin J. Goodwin. She graduated from Baxter High School in 1931, and from Grinnell College in 1935. During the summers while at Grinnell, she worked as a hostess on a Great Lakes cruise line. After graduation Louise taught English in Laurel, and Sioux Falls, S.D. She continued to advise her children and grandchildren in proper English language usage throughout her life.

In 1938, Louise married Joseph L. McKlveen of Prairie City, whom she had met at Grinnell College. Joe and Louise lived their entire married life in Prairie City, until Joe’s death in 2006, at which time Louise moved to Edina Park Plaza (now Brookdale) in Edina, where she resided comfortably and actively until her death.

Louise lived a very full and active life. In addition to raising a family of six children, she played an active role in the communities of Prairie City and Des Moines. She was a member of Prairie City PEO and American Home Club in Des Moines. Her commitment to Grinnell was reflected in writing her class newsletter until she outlived all of her classmates. Joe and Louise traveled the world for pleasure, and particularly enjoyed their annual trips to Cuernavaca, Mexico and winters in Green Valley, Ariz. Balsam Lake, Wis., was a favorite vacation spot for the family. Above all, her family was most important to her. For many years her weekly family letters kept everyone connected.

In addition to her husband, Louise was preceded in death by her eldest son, James and her brother, Russell Goodwin.

She is survived by her five remaining children, William (Jacki) of Boise, Idaho; Thomas (Nancy) of Mill Valley, Calif.; Mary Jo (Mark) Nissen of Minneapolis, Minn.; Richard (Kristen) of Prairie City; Robert (Ellen Jones) of Edina; and her daughter-in-law, Barbara McKlveen of Bend, Ore. Louise is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Monday, Jan. 8 at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church, 5730 Grove St. in Edina, with a funeral service to follow at noon. Lunch will be served at the church after the service. Internment will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10 at Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City. Memorials may be made in Louise’s honor to Grinnell College, Office of Development and Alumni Relations, Grinnell, IA 50112 or Good Samaritan United Methodist Church. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News 04 Jan 2018.
