Doris Louise Mellick, age 85, of Hiteman, passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at her home in Hiteman.

Doris was born on February 12, 1932 to Floyd and Myrtle (Longaker) Barker in Hiteman, Iowa. She grew up and graduated from the Albia High School with the Class of 1950. On December 20, 1952 she was united in marriage to John Lawrence “Sam” Mellick at the Zimmerman Funeral Home in Lovilia. To this union three children were born, Ann, Mike and Jeff (Geoff). Doris and Sam shared 58 years of marriage before Sam’s passing on October 24, 2011.

Doris was a secretary for Newton Manufacturing for many years and later helped substitute as a secretary for Farm Bureau in Albia. Doris was very active with different organizations in the community. She was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary. She was a member of the Church Women United and of the Dancing Grannies. She was very proud to volunteer to help with the Christmas dinners every year. Her real joy in life was spending time with her family and friends.

Doris is survived by her 2 children, Ann of Hiteman and Mike of Newton; five grandchildren, Jacob, Josh (Melissa) Calhoun, Paul (Rachelle), Ryan (Crystal), and Curt (Caitlin) Mellick; 13 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam; a son, Jeff (Geoff); her parents, Floyd and Myrtle; a great grandchild, Corbin Mellick; her siblings, Wanda Toltin, and Ruth, William and Richard Barker.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m., Monday, January 8, 2018 at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Pastor Lynda Carlson officiating. A private family burial will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m., Sunday, January 7, 2018 at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Doris’s family present from 6-8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Welcome Home Soldier memorial in Albia.
