Mingo Woman Dies in Mishap
One woman was killed and another injured early Saturday in a one-car accident one mile east of Mingo.
Dead is Laura D’ann Benefiel, 19, of Rt. 1 Mingo. A passenger, Shelly Freland, also 19, of Rt. 1, Collins was taken to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines with multiple injuries including facial lacerations. She was listed in “good” condition Saturday.
According to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, the accident occurred just after 1 a.m. on County Road F24. Benefiel, who was driving west, apparently lost control on the north road shoulder. Her car traveled 300 feet before jumping a dry creek and crashing into the creek embankment.
Funeral services were held today at The Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax.
The Rev. Charles Luers, pastor of the Mingo United Methodist Church, conducted services. Burial was in the McKeever Cemetery, north of Colfax.
Survivors are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ron Benefiel of Mingo; a sister, Mrs. James (Rhonda) Callahan of Mingo; a brother, Ronald Benefiel Jr., of Cherokee; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bender of Rockaway Beach, Mo., and Mildred Benefiel of Des Moines; and a step-grandmother, Eloise Benefiel of Des Moines.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather.
Miss Benefiel was employed at Charter Data in Des Moines.
The daughter of Ron and Lillie Mae Bender Benefiel, she was born June 26, 1962 in Des Moines and was a 1980 graduate of Mingo Community High School.
