Life Story of Marie J. Shaw
Funeral services were held Friday at the Monroe United Presbyterian Church. Rev. Douglas Maben conducted services and interment was in Monroe’s Silent City Cemetery.
Marie J., Mrs. William B. Shaw, of Monroe, passed away at the West Park Care Center of West Des Moines on October 27 after a lengthy illness at the age of eighty-one years and three months.
Marie was born July 11th, 1895 in Jasper County, Iowa, near Monroe. She was the daughter of Jasper and Nellie (Karr) Jarnagin. She lived her entire life in the Monroe area until failing health forced her to move to a retirement home in West Des Moines to be near her son and family.
On August 1st, 1917, she was united in marriage to William B. Shaw of Monroe, who preceded Marie in death on December 13th, 1972. Marie & William were active farmers in the Monroe Community.
She is survived by a son, Dwight W. Shaw of Des Moines and two granddaughters: Jeri Lynn, Mrs. Michael Elyea of West Des Moines and Sheri Kay Shaw, a student at Iowa State University, along with a brother, Ralph Jarnagin of Des Moines.
Marie Shaw spent several years teaching school in her early life and later received her degree from Drake University. She taught in the Monroe Public Schools until her retirement. She was an active member of the Monroe Presbyterian Church, Monroe Women’s Club and many other community activities throughout the years.
