Death of an Old Lady
Mrs. Christina Koethe, who has been making her home with her children in Newton and vicinity for some time past, died last Saturday, February 15, 1902. The funeral service was held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Louise Kraus, Sunday afternoon, and the remains were shipped to Lena, Illinois, for internment, Monday, Bert and Wm. Henning accompanying them.
Miss Christina Folkman was born in Krossen, Saxony, Germany, October 1819. Was married in 1845 to Louis Koethe; moved to America in 1859, locating near Lena, Illinois. Her husband died about two years afterward.
She was the mother of seven children, Mrs. Amelia Kraus, Mrs. Bertie Henning, Mrs. Conrad Schaumburg, Mrs. Elwena Reitmeier, Henry, William and Charles Koethe. After the death of her husband and her children grew unto manhood and womanhood, she has visited among them and has made several long visits in Jasper County where some of the children reside and who are among our best and staunchest citizens. The remains were taken to Lena, Illinois and will be interred alongside of her husband.
(Maiden name might be Volkman)
