Older Newton Citizens Knew Corbett Well
Was Frequent Visitor Here After He Moved to Des Moines – Spent Early Life in Jasper County – An Affable Man
The late I. N. Corbett, whose funeral was held in Newton, last Sunday afternoon, was one of the prominent insurance men of this city some twenty-five years ago. His early boyhood was spent on a farm near Kellogg, some eight miles east of Newton. He was born December 12, 1852.
The deceased was agent for the Iowa Insurance company here in Newton and was known as one of the most aggressive insurance men of the state. He was at one time vice president of the Iowa State Fire Prevention association. From here he went to Des Moines where he remained with the same company in the capacity of agent and adjuster. Some two years ago Mr. Corbett suffered a nervous breakdown and as a result his mind was so affected that it became necessary for him to go to the state institution at Clarinda, Iowa, where his death occurred last Wednesday – the immediate cause of death being heart trouble.
Mr. Corbett married Miss Adeline Wright, who with three children, Charles E., Harry E., and Miss Bessie all of Des Moines, survive the husband and father. The burial services here were in charge of the Knights of Pythians of which order the deceased was a faithful worker.
Mr. Corbett was a frequent visitor in Newton after he moved to Des Moines, and maintained many friendships here despite his long absence.
To Mr. Corbett belonged the credit of exposing the Greenleaf gang of “fire bugs” who conducted an organized scheme of robbing insurance companies in Iowa for years.
