Life Story of George Birkenholz
George W. Birkenholz, 86, of Monroe, a lifelong resident of Jasper county, died at 12:50 p.m. Tuesday at the Skiff Memorial hospital in Newton.
Funeral services were held Thursday at the Crumpacker Funeral Home in Monroe.
The Rev. Orin Young, pastor of the Monroe Methodist church, conducted the services. Music was by Mrs. Thelma Lewis.
Pallbearers were John Van Ryswyk, Earl Phifer, William McKee, Martin Lewis, Ordelle Oldham and Harold Efnor. Burial was in Monroe Cemetery.
Mr. Birkenholz is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Willard (Opal) Wilson of Monroe, four grandchildren, Ula Mae Herwehe of Newton, Dean Wilson of Otley, Delores Clark of Cedar Falls and Betty Kaiserlantern, Germany, five great grandchildren, Jackie Herwehe, Brenda Wilson, John and Susan Clark and Sandra Kloula; and a sister, Mrs. Ray Crow of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Myrtle Van Wyk; two grandsons, Melvin and Doyle Van Wyk; his parents and two sisters, Lillian and Louise Birkenholz.
Mr. Birkenholz was a member of the Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Daily News Three Quarter Century Club.
The son of Jacob and Mary Birkenholz, he was born December 14, 1873 near Monroe. He was married February 24, 1897 to Ada Estle.
